So äußerte sich der flämische Separatist Bart De Wever im Spiegel-Interview über die Rolle des Monarchen:
„Es ist ein Problem, dass der König noch eine politische Rolle spielt. Wenn es eine Krise gibt, wird der König wichtig, er führt die Regie bei der Regierungsbildung. Für uns Flamen ist das ein Nachteil, weil der König nicht so denkt wie wir. Für die Wallonen ist es ein Vorteil, weil sie mit ihm verbündet sind. Wir sind für die Republik“ De Wever

Es mag sein, dass einige der belgischen Streitparteien darauf setzen, dass die EU als einigendes Band eine Spaltung des Landes nicht zulassen wird. Wie wollte man auch mit Brüssel, der Hauptstadt Europas verfahren? Aufteilen?
